If I were starting my coaching business from scratch today, these are the five things I’d focus on first.
When I started my coaching business over 17 years ago, my daughter was just four years old.
Now she’s 21 and getting ready to head back to university.
Watching her grow up has become the timeline for my business. It made me stop and ask myself an interesting question:
If I had to start my coaching business all over again in 2026, knowing everything I know now, what would I do differently?
The online business world has changed dramatically over the years, but one thing hasn’t:
You don’t need to do everything.
You just need to focus on the right things.
If you’re dreaming of becoming a mom coach, here’s exactly where I’d start.
1. Decide Who You Want to Help
One of the biggest mistakes aspiring coaches make is believing they need to find the perfect niche before they can begin.
You don’t.
Instead, ask yourself:
- Who would I genuinely love spending my days helping?
- What challenges have I already navigated in my own life?
- What books, podcasts and conversations naturally excite me?
Often, the people you’re meant to help are simply a few steps behind where you are today.
For example, recently I stumbled across an Instagram account created by an empty nester mom. Her story resonated so deeply with me that it reminded me how naturally our own life experiences shape who we want to serve. That’s exactly how many successful coaching businesses begin.
The important thing to remember is this:
Your niche isn’t a lifelong commitment. It’s simply your starting point.
As you grow, your coaching business will naturally grow with you.
2. Learn the Coaching Skills You Need
If you’re worried you don’t know how to coach yet, that’s completely normal.
The good news?
Coaching is a skill you can learn.
If you’re called toward coaching, chances are you already have many of the qualities that great coaches possess:
- You’re a good listener.
- You’re approachable.
- You genuinely care about helping others.
- You enjoy encouraging people.
Those natural gifts are your foundation.
Learning coaching simply gives you a proven process for helping clients move from where they are today to where they want to be.
3. Start Coaching Before You Feel Ready
Confidence doesn’t come first.
Experience does.
One of the fastest ways to grow your confidence is by offering a few practice coaching packages.
You could:
- Offer four complimentary coaching sessions.
- Ask for honest feedback.
- Collect testimonials.
- Refine your coaching process.
You might also consider offering a free workshop for moms in your community or through a local organization.
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is discovering that you really can help people.
4. Keep Your First Offer Simple
You don’t need:
- Multiple packages
- A membership
- A complicated website
- A dozen different services
Instead, create one simple coaching offer.
When I first started, I offered a four-session coaching package.
Simple.
Clear.
Easy for clients to understand.
As you gain experience, you’ll naturally discover whether your clients need more support, longer programs, or different offers.
But don’t over-complicate it before you’ve coached your first few clients.
5. Invite People to Work With You
This is the step many new coaches avoid.
Not because they don’t care… but because it feels uncomfortable.
The truth is building a coaching business requires putting yourself out there.
That might look like:
- Posting a Reel.
- Sending an email.
- Offering a free workshop.
- Speaking at a local moms’ group.
- Introducing yourself to complementary local businesses.
You don’t need to send cold DMs or use sales tactics that don’t feel authentic.
Instead, simply let people know:
“This is what I do, and I’d love to help.”
The more you practice showing up, the easier it becomes.
The Best Time to Start Is Before You Feel Ready
If there’s one thing I’d tell my younger self, it’s this:
Don’t wait until you feel completely confident.
Take the next small step.
Help one person.
Learn from the experience.
Then help another.
That’s how coaching businesses are built.
