Simplicity Celebration: Sunday’s to Relax

sunday pancakes

Pancakes on Sunday have been such a part of our weekly rhythm for so long now I don’t even think that Kale has ever experienced that day of the week without kicking it off with some sort of syrupy pork product.

But after pancakes I would typically get caught up in the momentum of clean up and then getting down to any leftover tasks from the busy week; these usually involve either puttering around in the house with an extra latte fueling me for extra productivity power or getting busy in the garden.

But this Sunday was different.

This Sunday I woke up with a Digable Planets song stuck in my head:

Butterfly searchin for a relax
Pullin from the jazz stacks cause it’s Sunday
On the air is incense sounds to the ceiling
Tried to get this feelin since Monday

Sunday’s to relax, Sunday’s to relax

The last bit especially was super stuck and so with that I chilled. Pancakes didn’t even happen until ten which is totally unheard of in these parts. That’s how relaxed I was.

And under the spell of Doodlebug earworming into my brain,  I  heard myself saying “I’ll come”when Craig announced we were going on a canoe ride to check out the flooded fields in our area. Though the kids were wailing “noooo!!!! Mama stays home!” I informed them that yes, indeed;

I can be Fun Mum.

Meanwhile Craig talked them down by informing them I had to come otherwise he won’t be able to steer the canoe. Can you smell the love from where you’re at?

And it was unreal beautiful. And it was fun. I was fun. And relaxed. The kids thought I was freaking hilarious the whole time! And I got into that sense of adventure that was a big part of our falling into that deep love that all that hoopla was about ten years ago this week.

A golden moment was born on that canoe ride. And our puppy’s neck grew about six inches  (we’re looking into a life jacket for him don’t fret. Edie sure was the whole time.).

That’s my celebration this Tuesday of Simplicity Celebrations: Sunday’s to relax.

I will let go of my agenda just 5% more and see what sort of adventures the day has in store for me and the crew of cute. We will surrender to the golden moments.

Want to play? Share in the comments your simplicity celebration from the week or link to your blog post about it! I’m super excited to offer a widget over there on the side bar if you want to invite friends to ride in your simplicity celebration canoe!

Pancakes are part of our Sunday rhythm too. The rest of your day looks lovely. We set aside Sunday as our family day – a time to relax, chill and just be. We usually head into nature at some point throughout the day, that connection just feels so right on our family day.

So happy to see you relaxed into the day and enjoyed it!

For some reason, I started thinking about Cat Steven’s song “Morning is Breaking”-

I fondly remember the days when my kids were little and we just did stuff together! Something I am doing for myself for simplicity is heading outside into the shade and reading…not weeding, or staying inside to do dishes…I am going to make time to do this everyday. I am feeling that simplicity as a whole is unattainable for me since I can’t control others schedules…but I can make my life more simple and peaceful.

Ahhhh… there is so much reading I would love to get into too. Going to have to haul the hammock under the tree somewhere!

  6. Dear Daisy and Kathy,

It’s dry as a bone and hot, too, in central Texas. Your pics look positively lush and juicy! We’re keeping it simple and cool, though, the best we can. Check out a couple of ideas for water play this summer!

I just laughed out loud at the nooooo mommy can’t come comment. Damn, I can identify with that and although in my planning of child rearing, I wanted to be the parent that “held the line”, the one that had the final say- u get the picture- the whole “you can’t have 2 fun parents” responsibility thingie. But it is kind of sad to have the kids not want me to come along. I want to shout at the top of my lungs ” I used to be the fun crazy one before you two came along!!!” but I do like the “power” of being the boss- and I like the surprise and delight when they see me become the wild, crazy, fun, person that I once was. :: sigh :: parenting is hard! Thanks for pointing out the funny parts :)

Sigh~ I know. I guess we might just have to wait until they’re adults and then we can write our memoirs and that will be the time they’ll learn about the truth of how mama can really let her hair down!

  8. Awesome, Kathy! This is just what I do more and more too. And it feels divine!

The third photo made me catch my breath…that sure is a little bit of paradise you’ve got there…thanks for sharing it with us. We usually also do pancakes on Sunday. The kids love it.

Oh how much do I love everything about this post. I’m so guilty of letting each day get away from me. The busy daily grind of chores, to dos and being part of the rat race. I can’t remember the last time we just stopped to live simply like this. I am vowing this weekend to find something simple to partake in. And it might just start with something like a pancake breakfast (my husband would be so pleased!) From there we’ll see where the day takes us. P.S. Your images here are also stunning….xo.
